The season was nominated for four Emmy Awards, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or Special.

Plot[]

After a disturbing incident, a young couple (Lily Rabe and André Holland) move into a seemingly perfect home built in the 18th century in the woods of North Carolina. However, the building turns out to be in close proximity to the site of the legendary Lost Colony's disappearance, and as horrific supernatural events occur at the house, the couple start to sense something dark underneath the facade.

Production[]

In August 2015, co-creator Ryan Murphy stated "The next thing we're crafting up is very very different than Hotel, not smaller. But just not opulent. More rogue and more dark." [1]

In January 2016, FX president John Landgraf revealed that the season will be "principally set in the present", with a dual timeline in "echoes of the past". He also confirmed a fall 2016 premiere.[2]

In a late September issue of Entertainment Weekly, Falchuk and Murphy revealed there would be a major twist coming to the series in "Chapter 6".[3] The number "6" features in many teasers and posters as a clue, often shaped as a question mark.

Murphy confirmed the turn in the season being a behind-the-camera look at the production of the faux documentary “My Roanoke Nightmare”.[4]

AHS: Roanoke links all the seasons of the show together, therefore officially declaring a shared universe. It is also the first season to completely switch around the format of the show, which is a history channel-esque TV mockumentary combined with found footage.

Casting[]

Lady Gaga confirmed her involvement in March 2016.[5]

At PaleyFest 2016, Murphy invited AHS Repertory Company: Kathy Bates, Denis O'Hare, Sarah Paulson, Finn Wittrock, Cheyenne Jackson, Wes Bentley, and Matt Bomer to return to the show for its sixth installment. Matt Bomer, however, was no longer involved when production started. [6] Emma Roberts, originally attached to the project, renounced due to conflicting schedule.

Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Adina Porter later confirmed their participation. Porter already worked in the first season as minor character Sally Freeman.

Cuba Gooding, Jr., star of FX The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story joined the cast in a major role linked to Sarah Paulson's character. [7]
