Constance Langdon [1]is the next-door-neighbor of the Harmons and a major recurring character in American Horror Story (according to the show's creator, Ryan Murphy, she could even be considered a "third lead"). She was married to Hugo [2] and is the mother of Adelaide, Tate, Beauregard and one other unknown child. She is also the grandmother of Michael, but adopted him as her own child to protect him from the malicious spirits which reside in the Murder House.

Background Edit

Constance was born and raised in Virginia, but moved to Los Angeles to become an actress. After objecting to the nudity that was flooding the film industry at the time, her dreams of becoming an actress fell to the wayside. In 1983, she murdered both her husband, Hugo, and Moira O'Hara (with whom Hugo has cheated with once before) after catching them about to have sex, believing they were having an affair, when in reality, Hugo was trying to rape Moira (who tried to refuse his advances).

Constance visits Vivian upon learning she is pregnant with her grandchild.

Personality Edit

She purports to be gentle and goodnatured but can be cutting and rude. She cares very much for her children, even though she sometimes doesn't treat them as well as she should. She also runs a daycare for dogs out of her home. She has stolen Vivien's jewelry and silverware in an attempt to frame Moira. Despite this, it appears that she and Moira are involved in some sort of plot involving Vivien's pregnancy, as she brings over assorted innards of pig for Vivien, claiming the organs are "good" for the baby. She may also have some precognitive ability, for example: she entered the house in the middle of the night and keeps Ben from injury during the Pilot and the cupcakes she delivered for Violet ended up making one of the intruders violently ill during the home invasion.

Appearances Edit

  • "Pilot": Constance is introduced as the Harmon's intrusive next door neighbor. She also raids Vivien's jewelry box and is caught by Moira, though Moira does nothing about it. We find out the two are familiar with one another and Constance menacingly states, "Don't make me kill you again".
  • "Home Invasion": Constance bakes two large cupcakes, ostensibly for Violet, adding ipecac syrup to the batter. She is also seen having an encounter with a handsome young man named, Travis, and later assists Tate, and Moira in disposing of the bodies of the R. Franklin murder reactors.
Constance, aiming at (young) Moira from Episode 3.
  • "Murder House": In a flashback to 1983, Constance is shown walking in on her husband, Hugo, raping the housekeeper, Moira. Beleiving they are having an affair, she proceeds to shoot Moira through her eye, then turns and shoots Hugo three times in the chest. Later, she is caught again by Moira stealing silverware and tells Moira that she will keep stealing until she has "a full set" to sell on eBay and Moira is "fired for stealing" (she has two motives for stealing: money and framing Moira. It is possible she may also be a kleptomaniac). She explains Moira's cloudy eye as being a result of her "good shot". Constance is later seen walking her dogs and peers through the window of the murder house's attic. she spots Tate and waves to him, but he does not wave back, implying there is some animosity between the two.
  • "Halloween: Part 1": Constance is first seen in her house with Travis and her daughter Addy. She gets mad at Addy for what we assume is her thinking Addy is trying to flirt with Travis. Constance continued to argue with Addy over her Halloween costume and finally settles on buying her a "pretty girl" mask. Addy is later killed in a hit-and-run accident. A very upset, Constance tried to drag her onto the lawn of the house so would come back in spirit.
  • "Halloween: Part 2": Constance reveals to Violet that Tate is her son.
  • "Piggy Piggy": Constance appears in a flashback to 1994, revealing Tate was killed by a S.W.A.T team, while they occupied the house. She introduces Violet to medium named Billie Dean Howard, and tries to relate to Violet about her dealings with the dead.
  • "Open House": Constance tries to prevent Joe Escandarian from buying the house. We also learn that Larry Harvey, is in love with Constance, so much so that he murdered her son Beau, at Constance's request, to keep him from being taken from her and put in an institution.
  • "Rubber Man": Constance does not make an appearance in this episode.
  • "Spooky Little Girl": Travis leaves, after having an argument with Constance, only to have sex with Hayden. Constance later learns from Moira that, Tate has fathered one of Vivien's twins. Constance confronts Tate about this, and later proposes to Travis, apologizing for her earlier actions. She tells him the two can raise Tate's child together, to which he tells her he's unsure, as he is still trying to build his acting career. She shoots down his dreams, citing her own experiences. After they argue, Travis leaves again, hurt, and sleeps with Hayden once again. Constance makes it a point to go visit Vivien in the hospital, offering her help during the pregnancy. In the final scene, Constance sits with Billie Dean and asks her about what could result from human/spirit conception to which Billie Dean response, this could result in the birth of the Anti-Christ who will bring about the end of times.
  • "Smoldering Children": Constance is questioned about Travis's murdered as well as the murders of Hugo, Moira, and Beau. Although he did not have a hand in Travis's murder (other than disposing of his remains), Larry takes the fall in order to pay for all his sins. He tells Constance he will be able to endure any punishment as long as she admits she loves him, to which she coldly refuses.
  • "Birth": Constance assists in the birth of Vivien's twins and quickly snatches Tate's child (her grandchild), Michael.
  • "Afterbirth": Constance cautions Ben against bringing Michael back into the house. When Ben dies, she takes it upon herself to raise Michael as her own child. A three year epilouge reveals, she has fleed Los Angeles, currently raising Michael in an unknown location and returns home to find he has murder his nanny, implying he is living up to his title as the Anti-Christ. Constance smirks at this site in satisfaction.

Quotes Edit

(To Vivien) "Proud Virginian, the old dominion, born and bred, thank you for noticing..."

(To Ben) "Shh. It's not your time yet. Go back to bed."

(To Vivien) "I'm a good christian, but Jesus H. Christ..."

(To Violet) "They say when a parent dies, a child feels his own mortality, but when a child dies, it's immortality that a parent loses."

(To Violet) "He's a sensitive boy, you know that; A young man with too deep feelings, the soul of a poet, but none of the grit or steel that acts as a bulwark against... these horrors of this world.”

(To Violet') "I questioned my sanity when I first found out, but this house will make you a believer."

(To Vivien) "We need that baby. We need another...sweet child.

"At the end of the day... he meant less to me than dog shit."

(To Chad) "Why can't you people just be content with having pets? Why must you subject an innocent child to your perversions?

(To Larry) “Even dead, even a boy, he’s twice the man you are.”

(To Detective Granger) “I have grieved enough for two lifetimes. Most people would be broken by the deaths of their children, but my nature would not permit such weakness.”

Notes Edit

  • Constance's kitchen was used as a set for Ryan Murphy's other show, Glee. It was the kitchen of Santana's grandmother.
  • Although Constance stated that she had four children, a fourth child was never revealed. However in an recent interview with Tim Minear, it was revealed that there was suppose to be a mention of it in Constance's beauty salon speech in the final episode, but was cut. See the separate Theories page however: A subpage for Theories is available here.

  • Who the hell is her 4th child <_< ?

  • I liked when Constance shot her husband, dragged him down to the basement, chopped him up, then grinded him up, and fed him to the dogs. He deserved it.. he was cheating on her.

  • I dont know how she will beat her performance as Constance. I love the first season and I bet it will be the best one.

  • Next Season Jessica will play a Role again, please dont delete this Page and make a new one for the new Character Jessica will play.

  • I believe that this page has one small mistake. The part about the cupcakes. Constance only laced those poisonous cupcakes for violet because she was in her way of getting therapy for Tate. She didn't do it to stop the Franklin reenactors.

    • Yes, of course only for Violet. Where in the text is that mistake? I can't find it.

  • Although I loved Jessica Lange's performance, I don't like Constance. It seems like they tried to make her sympathetic at times, but I just don't have much sympathy toward her. I think it because she took the pain of her life disappointments out on her innocent children. Her kids were not to blame for the wrongs that had happened to her. Yes, it was weird how she called Tate's son her son, so as someone has said, it was like she was trying to start over with Tate's son. She got what she wanted! It seemed like Tate started off sweet, then gets screwed up for whatever reason. His son Michael was evil before he was born and killed his twin brother--I wondered if he did that intentionally. He laughs at murder at the age of three, so he surpassed his dad Tate when it came to wickedness. Tate learned how to be evil, Michael was born that way.

  • how can you guys criticize the changes if you have not even seen them yet?

    • I agree. If you were actually a true fan of AHS you would watch the series until the very end and trust in what the creators are doing. I for one is thrilled for season 2 with new mysteries in stored for us.

  • This show is AMAZING!!! Perfect acting, perfect cast, and a perfect location. I can't believe that the producers want to fuck it up by getting a new cast and a new location. WHAT THE FUCK!!! Haven't they ever heard of the expression "Don’t fix what isn't broken"? Honestly, television has gotten so bad over the years and now that there is finally something that appeals to me, I can't believe they want to completely destroy it by changing everything. I'm not sure about the rest of you AHS Fans out there, but I for one disapprove.

  • I really am sad that they are getting a new cast and location. I was really looking forward to Constance + the Antichrist...what a perfect team. The run-ins with Tate, his actual father!! God, that would be such a show to watch. Constance may be crazy and a bitch, but that's when you know she's a good actress that draws you in further. My favorite part of the season finale is how she looks worried that there's blood on the fridge and around the house, but when she actually sees Michael, she just looks at him with pure love!

  • I'm pissed about what they're gonna do for the 2nd season because I wanna know who her 4th child is! I hope they answer all unanswered questions somehow!

  • I think she is a ghost. At the hairdresser's they focus on her neck for a split second and it seems to be broken. No idea when exactly it happened though.

    • If she was a ghost she would not have been able to go to the hairdresser! Didn't you ever pay attention during the show!

    • I'm wondering about that too. I don't think She's a ghost per-say, but it was weird when they cut to her neck when she took off her things.

    • Her neck was scratched maybe by Michael to hint that he's evil? We'll never know ... Lol

    • I'm still wondering that too. After all, all the other ghosts don't age, EXCEPT Moira. Could be Constance is an exception to the rule.

    • glad to know i'm not the only one thinking she had a broken neck and might be a ghost. :)
if it was true, she would definitely be an unusual one, being able to walk freely...

  • I'll try to update her appearences in narrative style, meanwhile I added the "in need of cleanup" just in case that someone is already working on it.

  • Her Baby which i Tates baby is just so deadly must of got that from his daddy Tate huh crazy bitch now she's gonna pay for all the shit she's done with this kid

  • I find it unusual that her kitchen and the decor of her home are in 1960/late 50's retro. Her comments to Charles Dutton detective character about 'boy Dahlia' being found in the 'colored section' and comments (although inaccurate) regarding Koreans being paranoid after Hiroshima are very much considered 'outdated' in our current society. Her clothing in some scenes are very 'Leave it to Beaver-ish" and even the dress she's wearing when she kills Moira and Hugo seems a little 'off' for the period of mid 80's. Has anyone else noticed this? Are there any thoughts on this?

    • Also, in the opening title sequence the pictures appear to be with cloting circa a time in the 1800's. Perhaps this is something that the writers are making a time start before the Montgomery's built the home. Maybe on some land where evil and attrocities occured long before this house was built.

    • See the Clothing page on here... The designer said they wanted to leave it unclear whether she wasn't a ghost herself.

    • Maybe she just likes old fashioned stuff and always has haha?

    • I think she is just conservative in her thinking and fashion way of life. Part of conservative for her means backwards morals and thinking but I believe it is just part of her personality. Also she has no job, and in a scene it showed unpaid bills during a flashback so maybe she can't afford to update herself?

  • "what is the matter with you" constance is so annoying in that scene LOL

  • Her name is Constance, so she's the Constant (like on Lost lol). I think the only reason she hasn't died is because none of the ghosts want to spend eternity with her.

  • How come she's so horrified with Tate after she realises what he did to Vivien, but then after the birth of Vivien/Tate's child, she falls head-over-heels in love with it?

    • Fear from what Tate's actions could lead to- end of times. In love with the beauty of Tate, and the beauty of his child. The lady is obsessed with physical perfection. I'm sure there's more. Maybe because she lost Tate she thinks his offspring will be some kind of redemption for her.

  • how sad would it be to have 3 of your children dead (maybe 4 coz we dont know her forth child).

  • The harmons are disposable, especially ben and viv, I want them gone and Constance back in the house season 2 fighting with Moira, Hugo, Hayden, and Travis.

  • Though Constance is bat shit insane, I feel she's one of the more likable characters because she is played out to be a woman wronged so many times that it's only "natural" for her to act the way that she does. It isn't as if she's necessarily evil but a woman that knows far too much and has seen too much. As a result, she is extremely conflicted and struggles to discern what is the conventional definition of morality versus what one needs to do as a woman/mother. Overall, she represents the complexities of being human and how they are magnified when in direct contact with the supernatural world.

    • I don"t know if she is PURE evil but she is for sure a sociopath look at how she takes pride in killing Moira she even said "Every time I see your eye it reminds me that I'm a hell of a shot." She ruined Tate's childhood, abused Beau and had Larry kill him, broke-up Larry's family and is indirectly responsible for Larry's burns not to mention how she treated Addy.

    • lol how exactly was she "wronged" so many times? every insight we get in to her past and everything we've seen in the present is not of her being wronged, but of her just being a cold, calculated, sociopath. she's freakin MOMMY DEAREST.

  • wait, she has 3 or 4 children?

  • Does anyone remember the last name Constance introduces herself under in one of the earlier episodes? I know for sure it wasn't Langdon.

  • Constance is one crazy bitch, when I saw her grind up her husband and feed him to the dogs I died. She is totally nuts but so likeable at the same time.

  • My brother and eye just watched all the episodes we recorded and when we saw spooky little girl I told him Constance should be proud how many women can say their Grandchild is the Anti Christ

  • We don't really know whether Constance was married to Hugo. We don't even know whether Hugo's last name was Langdon... So while generally I'm the one reaching, I find this reaching.
